Students from a non-European Union (EU) or non-European Economic Area (EEA) country require a residence permit in order to study in Sweden for longer than 3 months. Further, the residence permit you were granted must have been with the intent to live and work in Sweden for a substantial period of time. If you moved to Sweden as a student or as a temporary worker such as an au pair, you will not qualify for permanent residency. As an EU citizen, you have the right to work, study, or live in Sweden without a residence permit. You have the right of residence if you are employed, self-employed, a student, or have sufficient means to support yourself. If you have the right of residence in Sweden, you do not need to contact the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).
